The Yellow Wallpaper

By Doctor Monroe

I'm a friend of John the Physician; he made an appointment with me for March 4, 1892 to talk about his sickly wife. He told me that she wasn't physicially ill but she was mentally. He told me that he knew something was wrong with her but  whenever his wife said something was wrong, he always assured her that she was fine. He didn't want his wife to worry about her health so he came alone. One day he found a journal that she wrote her past days in and brought it to me to read. In her journal it talked about the house they moved in but more specifically...the large room she slept in. She describes the rooms' peculiar yellow wallpaper with a strange pattern all over it. The majority of the journal talked about this wallpaper but other details she expressed was the way she cried when she was alone, her nervous weakness, the fatigue she had during the days and restlessness during the nights. It also says, written in bold letters, "it does not do to trust in people to much." The sick lady also writes about her hallucinations and delusions she has about the wallpaper, such as that there is a lady behind the it crawling, moving, and shaking the wallpaper, trying to escape. I did a lot of research from the records in the journal, to all the stories John told me about. For months, John and I met up to discuss my findings. I finally finished my research and my conclusion for his wife was that she was suffering from major depression. I came up with his because she seems to have very sad feelings almost everyday, has lost weight due to not eating, has lost interest in activities, sleeps too little, feelings of being tired and weak, feelings of irritability towards others and has hallucinations and delusions. Her depression is the reason she has a sense that she is sick but John didn't understand because it was a problem she was facing within herself.

  1. I believe that this lady might have been depressed but I also think that she had a lot more wrong with her than just being depressed. She shows way more signs of other problems as well.
